A Public Policy Polling survey shows Newt Gingrich with a five-point lead over Mitt Romney among Florida Republicans, with 38 percent to Romney’s 35 percent.
That’s a 12-point gain for Gingrich from PPP’s last poll in Florida a week ago.
Pollster Tom Jensen said other good news for Gingrich in the poll is that his supporters appear more committed than Romney’s, with 78 percent of Gingrich backers, but only 73 percent of Romney backers, saying they don’t expect to change their minds. Among those whose minds are completely made up, Gingrich led 45-36 percent.
The poll also indicated Gingrich’s lead would expand if Rick Santorum dropped out of the race, Jensen said.
In the matchup, Santorum came in third with 13 percent and Ron Paul last with 10 percent, with 6 percent giving “someone else” or don’t-know answers. The poll got responses from 921 likely Republican primary voters on January 22-23, for an error margin of 3.2 percentage points.
Public Policy Polling is a North Carolina-based, Democratic-oriented firm that uses automated dial polling, and says its published polls are neutral. You can see full results of the poll here.
