The Rick Perry presidential campaign says it raised more than $17 million in the first 49 days of his campaign.
The figure represents the amount the campaign will report for its first fundraising quarter—the three months ending Sept. 30—but Perry didn’t enter the race or officially begin fundraising until Aug. 13, the campaign says.
The financial report will say that the the campaign had $15 million cash on hand as of Sept. 30. All but about $50,000 of the money it raised was designated to the primary race rather than the general election.
Accepting any money for the general election suggests, but doesn’t guarantee, that Perry will reject public financing for his general election campaign.
