Obama, Nelson hold narrow Florida leads in Q poll

Sen. Bill Nelson and President Barack Obama both hold narrow leads in Florida for re-election in November, according to a new Quinnipiac poll.

Obama led presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney 46-42 percent among Florida voters in the poll, reversing the outcome of the same poll in May, which showed Romney with a significant lead, 47-41 percent.

In the Florida U.S. Senate race, Nelson led Rep. Connie Mack IV, frontrunner for the Republican nomination, by 43-39 percent. For Nelson, that’s a slight improvement from the May installment of the poll, which showed Mack one point ahead, 42-41 percent.

But leads by both Democrats, Nelson and Obama, are narrow compared to the poll’s 2.4-point error margin.

Nelson held larger leads over other contenders for the GOP nomination, including Mike McCalister, Dave Weldon and George LeMieux, who dropped out of the race Wednesday. Mack continued to hold a dominating lead in the primary race, with 41 percent among Republican voters, and no other candidate breaking into double figures.

As in many polls, Nelson held his lead despite lukewarm voter approval ratings—47 percent saying they approve of the job he’s done as senator, compared to 32 percent who don’t.

The June 12-18 poll included 1,697 registered voters. Full results here.
