Meridian Avenue Set For Lighting Improvements Before RNC

Meridian Avenue, a downtown roadway linking the Selmon Expressway with the Channel District, will receive roughly $450,000 in lighting improvements just in time for the Republican National Convention.

Meridian, from the end of the expressway’s reversible lanes to Channelside Drive, is a bit too dimly lit, said Sue Chrzan, Tampa-Hillsborough County Expressway Authority spokeswoman. Adding LED lighting to trees and decorative wave banners along Meridian will give the roadway “extra pop that will make it a showcase at night.”

Project manager Marty Stone expects the work to be complete by the end of July, about a month before the GOP convention in the Forum. The Aug. 27-30 convention is expected to bring about 50,000 people to Tampa.
