Florida’s GOP Sen. Mel Martinez is hitting the road for appearances at two major universities starting next week to make the case for comprehensive immigration reform.

On Friday, Oct. 5, Martinez will be at Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, N.C. where he’ll be the send-off keynote speaker at a three-day conference on what the university is billing immigration as one the United States’ most hotly debated issues.

He’ll then head to South Bend, Ind., for another immigration forum at the University of Notre Dame on Oct. 8.

The Cuba-born senator and Republican National Committee chairman who was one of about 10 senators who tried to shape a bipartisan compromise earlier this year that could bring citizenship to millions of immigrants in the country, but the fragile deal could not muster enough support.

The Wake Forest conference, titled “Immigration: Recasting the Debate,” starts Wednesday. The opening-day keynote address will be given by Ray Marshall, who was a member of presidents Bill Clinton’s and Jimmy Carter’s administrations. That day also will include a film screening of the documentary, “Crossing Arizona,” which explores the immigration issue.

The remainder of the event will include panel discussions involving policy experts from both right- and left-leaning organizations ranging from the Cato Institute, the Economic Policy Institute, The Heritage Foundation and the World Policy Institute, and top scholars on the issue of immigration reform.

At the Notre Dame forum, Martinez will participate in a panel discussion on immigration issues.

Scheduled to join him on that panel will be Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano; Hazelton, Pa., Mayor Louis Barletta; and Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles Roger Michael Mahony(cq). The discussion will be moderated by Ray Suarez, a senior correspondent of The Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
