Mack gets convention speaking slot

The Republican Party has announced that Rep. Connie Mack IV, the newly-minted GOP nominee for U.S. Senate, will speak at the convention in Tampa.

The announcement by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus didn’t say when Mack would speak, or whether he’s likely to get a coveted slot during prime time television coverage. It called him one of six “headliners” for the convention along with Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio and Artur Davis, a former Democrat and former Alabama congressman who was an early backer of President Barack Obama and a Democratic national convention speaker in 2008 but has switched parties.

Mack, of Fort Myers, easily won the GOP Senate primary Tuesday over former Rep. Dave Weldon and two lesser-known candidates.
