By now, most kids are probably experiencing a sugar hangover from the candy bars and gum and Sweetarts they glommed going door-to-door for Halloween.
But not the kids at the Learning Gate Community School in Lutz.
Instead of gathering candy for themselves, the students set out on a mission to collect goodies for Treats for Troops, an organization that ships sweets to deployed troops.
Michele Northrup, who is organizing the effort at Learning Gate, says that 550 students took part and gathered a total of 145 pounds on Halloween.
“The looks on their faces was priceless,” she says. “They were so excited.”
The candy drive did not end with Halloween, says Northrup.
The drive lasts through Thursday and the candy will be delivered Nov. 7 to Treats for Troops.
If you want to contribute, you can drop candy off to the school, located at 16215 Hanna Rd. Lutz,, or at the Weight Watchers, 13112 N. Dale Mabry, Tampa, where one of the school members is affilated.
