In the wake of the death of Republican Party Chairman Dave Bitner, party leaders appear to be in consensus to take Bitner’s own recommendation for his successor—current party Vice Chairman Leonard Curry of Jacksonville, who’s Duval County chairman.
That’s the word from Paul Senft of Haines City, one of Florida’s delegates to the Republican National Committee.
Senft said Bitner made the recommendation to the state executive committee of the party before he resigned from the post because of his deteriorating health last week. “More than 99 percent of everybody I’ve talked to want to follow his recommendation,” Senft said.
Senft said Hillsborough party leaders favor Curry, and that Gov. Rick Scott has assented.
He said Curry was part of Bitner’s management team, and was involved in putting into place political action plans for the 2012 election year. “This way there won’t have to be any changes,” he said.
Curry manages a Jacksonville firm that provides accounting and financial services for businesseses, and has told party insiders his partners have cleared him to take the time to do the chairman’s job through the 2012 election.
