Sen. George LeMieux said that U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is “very pleased with where we are” in Florida, now that state lawmakers have approved a commuter rail bill in special session.
LeMieux was one of several members of Florida’s congressional delegation who spoke last night with LaHood about the passage of rail legislation that proponents said could help Florida win to win the $2.5 billion federal grant to build high-speed rail between Tampa and Orlando.
“I’ve been keeping in touch with [transportation officials] throughout the process, to let them know that Florida has done its part,” said LeMieux, R-FL, adding, Secretary LaHood “was very positive about it; he said it was a great day for Florida ... We are well-poised and well positioned.”
Federal transportation officials will decide at the start of January whether to award the grant, said LeMieux, who pledged to continue pressing Florida’s case until then.
