George LeMieux, who’s had a rough couple of weeks in his U.S. Senate campaign, is seeking to recoup by announcing endorsements from five state legislators.
Today LeMieux announced endorsements from state Sen. Stephen Wise of Jacksonville, and state Reps. Matt Gaetz of Fort Walton Beach, Jason Brodeur of Sanford, George Moraitis of Fort Lauderdale and John Tobia of Melbourne.
LeMieux took a hit last week when former state Republican Party Chairman Jim Greer told reporters that LeMieux and former Gov. Charlie Crist both knew about a secret company Greer set up to get fees from the state Republican Party for fundraising. Crist later added to LeMieux’s woes by saying LeMieux had recommended Greer as state chairman.
Greer has been indicted on charges of scamming the Republican Party, but contends he was set up by party leaders. LeMieux, Crist’s longtime political associate and former chief of staff, has been struggling to separate himself from the former governor, who’s now anathema in the party.
