Jeb Bush Lands Corporate Board Gig

The Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. announced today that Jeb Bush has been chosen for a seat on the company’s board of directors.

Tenet is the largest hospital chain in the nation, and Florida is its second-biggest market, the Associated Press noted. It quoted another board member, former U.S. Sen. Bob Kerry of Nebraska, as saying the appointment “reflects the real strides the company has made in recent years to build a solid foundation for future growth based on integrity and quality.”

In a statement issued by Tenet, Bush said he was impressed by the Dallas-based company’s commitment to improving patient care.

The company recently was the subject of several investigations into Medicare overbilling. For many years, a high percentage of its revenue came from exploiting a loophole in Medicare regulations covering high-cost patients.

The company reached a $900 million settlement with the government last year on those charges.

Tenet also has been a major political donor in Florida. The company has given to candidates of both parties, but most heavily to the Republican Party. From 1996 through last year, Tenet contributed $162,500 to the state party.

According to company filings, members of the board of directors make $65,000 per year, plus $1,500 for attending board meeting, plus expenses.
