Independent gubernatorial candidate Lawton “Bud” Chiles III is dropping out of the race and endorsing Democratic candidate Alex Sink.
Rumors and speculation have circulated for days, both in the press and political circles, that Chiles would abandon his uphill race to the governor’s mansion. Many Democrats have feared that Chiles, son of the late Democratic Gov. Lawton Chiles, could wind up being a spoiler in a tight race by claiming votes that would otherwise have gone to Sink. (For a different take on the possible impact, check out pollster Tom Jensen’s analysis.)
Chiles’ campaign has issued an advisory saying that Chiles will appear with Sink at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Tallahassee to make the formal announcement.
