The House’s proposed budget for FY 2010-2011 includes a proposal that could yield an extra $84 million for Florida.
Nope; House leaders haven’t shifted out of their anti-tax gear all of a sudden. “We are not raising taxes or fees—I think that’s a clear message,” said Ellyn Bogdanoff, chairwoman of the House’s Finance and Tax Council, which approved the measure earlier this week.
No, that $84 million is the predicted amount that Florida will collect by creating a three-month amnesty program aimed mostly at businesses that have failed to pay what they owe in sales and other taxes. Participants in the program would get a reprieve from the penalties they face.
“It’s going to raise money; it’s going to collect taxes we’re not currently getting,” said Bogdanoff, R-Ft. Lauderdale, reiterating that it’s an enforcement issue, not a take hike.
“It’d be nice if it was more,” she added. But “$84 million—that’s not chump change.”
