Hillsborough School Board Fails Team Training

Posted Aug 28, 2007 by Marilyn Brown, Education Reporter

Updated Aug 28, 2007 at 01:25 PM

School board members together for a workshop on how to get along, didn’t quite get it.

In the midst of a discussion on how school board meetings are run, veteran school board member Carol Kurdell pointed out that April Griffin had shut her folder and sat back, saying the first-year board member was disengaging from this meeting and board meetings.

“Let’s deal with this,” Kurdell said.

Griffin disagreed, saying she doesn’t disengage from school board meetings.

After some more back and forth among school board members, Jennifer Faliero suggested to Griffin: “Resign.”

Griffin shot back: “I need to resign? I’m not doing this.”

After more exchanges, Griffin left, slamming the door.

All this happened less than an hour into the meeting called “creating a vision for your district.”

They’ve now gone back into the training, without Griffin present, to talk about the one goal they want to achieve for the district in the next year.

Just what is the goal of the school board? Regardless of who is right or wrong this is a prime example of why our schools are failing. If it wasn’t for Griffin and Valdes we the public wouldn’t know as much as we do and I believe that is they way the other board members want it. If anyone should resign shouldn’t it be Faliero at least until she is back in the district? I’m sorry for her personal situation but she certainly is not the only person to go through a divorce and why isn’t $40,000 enough..a lot of teachers make less than that.

A big ‘Thank You’ to April Griffin for standing up to the rest of the board in her first year!! Don’t back down & don’t let them bully you. That’s all they’re doing because it seems that they have forgotten who elected them into their position.

And now let’s see if they can pass they can pass the 4th grade Florida Writes, since their actinf like 4th graders.

Now a more direct approach, from the employers perspective:  People, get your act together, we have a job to do, and your failing as dreadfully at that as you are communicating with each other. If you can’t do the job, resign.

Enough said.

From observation of the school board meetings it seems from
the beginning Mrs. Griffin along with her parrot, Mrs Valdes. have
a hidden agenda.  Neither one of them have the business /educational
background to support their sitting on the Board of a three billion dollar business….
Mrs.Griffin & Mrs. Valdes actions speak louder than the dribble that comes out of their mouthes…..

the focus of your article should have been on the unproductive sessions our school board is having. Props to April—she is the best one up there

Hidden Agenda?  I don’t know how you get to that.

Aprils campaign loudly declared her intent to challenge the good ‘ol boy network in order to bring accountability and transparency to a school district that is fraught with mismanagement, abuse and waste.

The only hidden agenda would appear to be Mr Bolen’s.  I am left wondering if he is one of Ms. Elias lap dogs.

Go April, keep up the fight.  That’s what we elected you to do.

The School Board was not elected to be “a team”.  The School Board is elected to set policies and provide oversight to and require accountability from the district administration, and April Griffin and Susan Valdes are the only ones who seem to be doing that.

News accounts of the district’s adventures dovetail nicely with April’s and Susan’s evaluations, which tells this observer which members were actually paying attention and which were just hanging out with their colleagues on the taxpayer’s nickel.

The people who elected the board have a right to expect each of them to be just as vigilant and just as tough-minded and just as skeptical (and critical) of the administration as Griffin and Valdes are.

For Mr Green,

I don’t know,  nor have met or communicated in any way with any of the past or present School Board members.
Please refer to last sentence of previous posting regarding ACTIONS…

Mr. Bolen apparently neglects to cite Mrs. Faliero’s inexperience as a School Board Member.
It seems the hidden agenda arises through Mr. Bolen (allied with the School District against Griffin and Valdes) and the other School Board members who continue with their subjective and antiquated ways and poor management that allows this current school administration to harrass and retaliate on the two new and innovative progressive Board Members, Griffin and Valdes, who are obviously doing their job for the community.
Accolades to Griffin and Valdes, apparently the only thing the School District can throw at the both are petty comments to try to discredit your outstanding work!!!!
Thank you! Keep up the fight for your community and education!

The main concern of School Board meetings is the unproductive sessions that taxpayers pay for while disrespect is thrown from the mummified board members who collect dust towards the progressive members Valdes and Griffin.
A major lack of communication stems from the older board members. They are completely disrespectful to Valdes and Griffin.
“Times are a changing” the cliche goes, maybe Faliero, Lamb and Kurdell should just resign and give back to the community in this manner.
We should praise Griffin and Valdes for their courageous battle in the School District.  It’s about time someone in the School Board is on the side of the community.

Mr. Bolen,

When actions are congruent with public intent, there is not a hidden agenda… get it?

I find it appalling that people who stand up for what they believe in are labeled dangerous “mavericks” and whose comments are disregarded by their own employee as useless. Ms. Griffin and Mrs. Valdes are two board members who are doing their job, not by being simple “yes” people, but by truly challenging this county’s schools to become *better* and by opposing a cadre of individuals who are ruling more as a dictatorship than as a democratic, thoughtful, well meaning, and open organization. I feel their frustration and their frustration is warranted. Ms. Griffin and Mrs. Valdes: You know what’s right. Please keep challening the system!
