Hillsborough commissioners appoint rail opponent to HART board

Hillsborough County commissioners this morning appointed Karen Jaroch, chair of the Tampa 912 Project and a tea party advocate, to the board of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority.

Jaroch was a leader in the No Tax For Tracks movement that opposed the HART-driven sales tax referendum last year that would have funded light rail and other transportation projects. Voters defeated the referendum in November to increase the sales tax by 1-cent on the dollar.

Jarosh, who also opposes high-speed and commuter rail, said in a June interview, that Bus Rapid Transit, HART’s Plan B now that light rail is not a possibility, is worth a try.

“If HART provides a service that is faster and cheaper and more convenient than other forms of transportation available, people will try it and would very likely adopt it in their routine,” she said at the time.

A couple of weeks after the November vote on light rail, Jaroch called support for commuter and high-speed rail is an issue a “litmus test” for conservatism and “low-hanging fruit” for those truly committed to cutting state spending.

Finally, our county commission appears to have a brain cell.  Will pray that Mrs Jaroch does not become contaminated by her association with this board.

I know Karen will do a wonderful job on the board.  She will truly represent the intersts of the citizens of Hillsborough County.
