The battle between George LeMieux and Adam Hasner in the U.S. Senate primary isn’t becoming any more civil. Hasner’s making fun of LeMieux’s French extraction, and LeMieux’s responding with a web site calling Hasner “a phony conservative.”
Hasner’s campaign started the French theme by handing out a bumper sticker intended to highlight LeMieux’s relationship with former Gov. Charlie Crist, a handicap for LeMieux in the primary—“LeMieux: It’s French for Crist,” it says.
“Now George wants us to say ‘c’est la vie’ and believe his reinvention as a conservative is legitimate?” asks Hasner’s new website, frenchforcrist.com.
In response, LeMiuex has set up his own new website, phonyconservative.com, which notes that Hasner once advertised himself as a moderate and has voted for tax increases and other things heretical to today’s rightist Republicans.
“Career politician Adam Hasner’s desperation reached a new low ... Hasner took the low road and attacked George LeMieux’s ethnic background,” says LeMieux’s news release announcing the web site.
BTW, the name “lemieux” appears to stem from the French words for “the best” or “better”; the name has also been associated with the town of Leymieux in the Loire. A quick Google check doesn’t produce any clear meaning for “Hasner.”
