Rep. Shawn Harrison of New Tampa has announced he’ll run for re-election to his House seat in November, and won’t enter the GOP primary for East Hillsborough’s state Senate seat.

Rep. Rachel Burgin and former state Senate President Tom Lee are both seeking the nomination to replace state Sen. Ronda Storms, who is leaving her seat to run for Hillsborough County property appraiser.

In a news release, Harrison sais he wants to “continue what I started” with the Fallen Heroes Family Tax Relief Act, which grants a homestead tax exemption for surviving spouses of veterans or first responders killed in the line of duty. Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill last week in a ceremony in Tampa, but before taking effect, it must be approved by voters on the November ballot as Amendment 9.
