As expected, state Rep. Rich Glorioso, R-Plant City, has entered the race for Hillsborough County’s next election supervisor.
Glorioso, who is termed out after serving eight years in the state House, has filed paperwork to run for the seat in the 2012 elections.
A retired Air Force colonel, Glorioso served as a Plant City Commissioner from 1998 to 2004, including stints as the vice chairman of the Public Transportation Commission chairman of the Metropolitan Planning Commission, among other committee posts.
The Plant City Republican will likely face a heated challenge from Democrat Craig Latimer, who serves chief of staff for the current elections supervisor, Earl Lennard. One other, Republican Julianne De Priest also has filed to run for the office, which oversees one of the state’s largest electorates.
Latimer is a former Hillsborough sheriff’s detective who was named chief of staff under former Supervisor of Elections Phyllis Busansky. After Busansky’s death, Latimer threw his name in the hat to take her place, but Gov. Charlie Crist chose Lennard instead.
Lennard, a Republican and former Hillsborough schools superintendent, said he won’t run for re-election in 2012.
