Former Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita has been recognized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for an anti-bullying program she created about two years ago.
On Friday, the FBI’s Tampa division awarded Ferlita the 2011 Director’s Community Leadership Award in recognition for her Bully Busters program.
“We established Bully Busters without tax dollars,” Ferlita said in a written statement. “We received grants and we all invested our own “sweat” equity. Together, we made this happen in our county for our youth and for future generations of young people.”
In March, Ferlita will travel to Washington D.C. to formally receive the award from FBI Director Robert Mueller III.
Ferlita, a pharmacist, served eight years as a Tampa city councilwoman and four years as a county commissioner. More recently she ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Tampa, losing a March 22 runoff election against Bob Buckhorn.
