Sen. Mike Fasano says he’s accepting reservations now for seats on a bus to the state’s Citizens Property Insurance rate hearing scheduled on Sept. 13 in Tampa.
Fasano, who pressed the Office of Insurance Regulation to hold a hearing in the Bay area on the latest rate request by Citizens, isn’t letting a little thing like transportation problems get in the way of packing the room with outraged consumers. The senator is working with the Policyholders of Florida advocacy group to coordinate bus rides for folks to attend to the hearing, which will take place at the Tampa Convention Center.
“Recognizing that many people may not have the ability to drive to the hearing, or who would rather not drive after dark, we are securing buses to bring people down to Tampa so they can participate,” Fasano said in a written statement.
The Citizens rate request includes a hefty increase of optional sinkhole coverage rates to make them actuarially sound. In some parts of the Bay area, that translates into rate increases of more than 2,000 percent. Lawmakers passed legislation this spring—over Fasano’s vehement objections—allowing Citizens to make the rate request this year.
Anyone wanting a seat on Fasano’s Sinkhole Express should call his local district office, he says.
