Dean Coming To Florida Fundraiser

He may not be very popular with some Democrats right now considering the DNC’s fight with the Florida Democratic Party over the state’s presidential primary, but that won’t stop DNC Chairman Howard Dean from raising money in Tallahassee.

And Florida Democratic Party Chair Karen Thurman, at the center of the state party’s struggle with the national party, is one of the hosts of the Oct. 9 fundraiser.

Dean is the guest of honor at the fundraiser, to be held in the offices of a Tallahassee law firm, with prominent Tallahassee Democrats including former party chairman Scott Maddox and city Commissioner Allan Katz as hosts, along with Thurman.

The event invitatiion asks attendees for a minimum $100 contribution.

Katz, a DNC member, said Dean contacted him last spring to ask him to help put the event together. Katz acknowledged that “There are some people who are upset with him,” but added the event is “an opportunity for people in Leon County to see the chairman of the party.” He pooh-poohed the notion that Dean may be a persona non grata in Florida now that the DNC has declared it won’t seat a Florida delegation at next summer’s Democratic National Convention.

“My view of the world is that you do what you do regardless of how things may appear at the moment,” he said. “I think the Democrats are going to win the presidential election, Howard Dean is a guy’s who’s a friend, we talked about doing this a while back, and I didn’t see any reason to cancel,” he said.
“We’re going to get over this and life will be fine.”
