Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, known as a strict conservative, has endorsed George LeMieux in the Florida Republican Senate primary.

The endorsement follows an announcement Tuesday by Rep. Connie Mack IV, R-Fort Myers, frontrunner in the primary, of an endorsement by Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuno.

In a statement from the LeMieux campaign Coburn said during LeMieux’s temporary appointed stint in the Senate, “George was a proven leader,” passing Medicare fraud legislation and “the 2007 Solution, a roadmap to balance our budget.”

LeMieux called Coburn “a conservative’s conservative.’

LeMieux and Rep. Connie Mack of Fort Myers, frontrunner in the battle for the nomination to run against Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson in November, have been engaging in a battle for high-level endorsements.
