Clendenin announces for state Dem chairman

Alan Clendenin of Tampa has announced he’ll run for chairman of the state Democratic Party.

Clendenin is an air traffic controller who’s also been active in organized labor as well as in the Democratic Party.

Currently, he a Hillsborough County delegate to the state party’s executive committee, and one of the state party’s delegates to the Democratic National Committee.

He said the party’s focus for the next two years should be on defeating Republican Gov. Rick Scott, and that last week’s election shows the way.

He said the election “will be seen as the day Florida political tides shifted from red to blue.”

Clendenin said he wants to see the state party duplicate the voter turnout mechanism built by the Obama campaign in Florida, and to “nationalize” the governor’s race, meaning draw support from around the nation.

“I want to make sure Democrats nationwide know Florida is a firewall, and to break through it, we have to take that governor’s mansion,” he said.

Current party Chairman Rod Smith has said he won’t run for re-election because he wants to focus on helping his son recover from cancer.
