Former presidential candidate Herman Cain is planning what he calls an “unconventional” endorsement in the Republican presidential primary, and is also making one in Florida Senate primary—he’s backing longtime friend and fellow restaurant chain executive Craig Miller.
Cain and Miller will hold a news conference Thursday in Orlando to make a “major announcement.” The campaign won’t confirm that it’s an endorsement, but Cain will also accompany Miller to a fundraiser afterward.
After the dust from the Jan. 31 presidential primary settles, campaign sources said, Cain is also expected to return to Florida for a tour with Miller, including some Tampa Bay area appearances.
Miller, former CEO of the Ruth’s Chris steakhouse chain, is a former president of the National Restaurant Association, as is Cain, former head of Godfather’s Pizza, and the two have known each other for years.
Miller may be the darkest horse in a primary with several dark horses. He’s competing with Adam Hasner, George LeMieux, Connie Mack IV and Mike MacCalister for the nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in November.
