Former county commissioner and long-time Tampa Democratic stalwart Phyllis Busansky says she’s “strongly considering” running for county elections supervisor in the November elections.
Busanksy, who served as a county commissioner from 1988-96, ran unsuccessfully in 2006 for the U.S. House seat held by Gus Bilirakis, and has also served as director of the state welfare reform board.
Busansky said she has had friends urging her to run.
“The issue is competence and integrity,” she said. “Our elections office makes me fearful. People need to have faith in our votes.”
Busansky mentioned her interest in the race on the Florida This Week political talk show taped this afternoon. It will air tonight and will repeat through the weekend.

Supervisor of Elections is an extremely important position. One need look no further than Sarasota County in 2006 and the missing votes fiasco in the Congressional race there to understand that. Therefore it is important that Hillsborough Democrats field the strongest possible candidate for that position.
Phyllis Busansky fits that bill. As a former County Commissioner and a recent Congressional candidate, she has the name recognition to give her instant credibility as a candidate. Her long experience in civic affairs also makes her particularly well suited for this position.

I fully support the candidate who is already in the race, Mr. Lee Nelson. Lee put his name in because he wants the job, not the name recognition. Lee’s technology experience is second to no one currently in this race or having expressed interest in it. Lee has an unparalleled respect for our right to vote. Lee has the integrity to run a campaign and an SOE office that will make Hillsborough County proud. These are reasons to throw your support behind him.
As for the political reporting nowadays - enough from politicians who love to run ... enough from political consultants who are out for their paycheck and praise ... enough from Democrats not interested in helping the Democratic Party.
