Florida Agriculture Commissioner Charles Bronson became the second statewide elected Florida officeholder to takes sides in the Republican presidential primary Monday, supporting Mitt Romney.
Romney made a pilgrimage to Tallahassee to meet with the Republican legislative delegation and Gov. Charlie Crist, as his leading opponents ins the primary also have done.
While here, he announced support from Bronson and 10 state legislators, including Rep. Trey Traviesa of Tampa and Sen. J.D. Alexander of Lake Wales.
Of the four Republicans who hold statewide offices in Florida, two are now committed in the primary—Bronson and Attorney General Bill McCollum, state chairman for Rudy Giuliani.
That leaves Crist and U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, who probably will remain at least publcly neutral because of his position as national party chairman. Crist has been the subject of competition among all the candidates for his endorsement.
Crist has said he probably will take sides in the primary, but not right away, and not before the end of the state legislative session May 4.
The three leading candidates have competed to form state organizations in Florida and announce endorsements.
