Once again, Tampa is trying to define itself and develop a new slogan to help market the city.

As part of a survey delivered to community leaders, a firm asked: If you were to describe downtown Tampa as an animal, what animal would it be and why?

So now it’s your turn. Unleash the beast in you and tell us what type of animal downtown Tampa is and why.

Send your comments in the form below. Include your full name, email address and location so we can contact you. Some comments may be published on TBO.com, the Tampa Tribune and WFLA News Channel 8. Telephone numbers and emails will not be published.

I think with the laidback type atmosphere that Tampa offers in all walks of life we should use the Parrot. Colorful and tropical with a sense of whimsy. grin

I think it should be a TARPON

All the downtown windows reflecting the sun with the bay behind it resembles all the scales relecting the sun when the magnificent fish jumps.

Picture downtown as a school of giant tarpon leaping next to the bay, it may even start a new tournament!

Certainly NOT an owl, bat or any other twilight friendly creature.

I feel that the Florida Crane would be a great animal to represent downtown Tampa, for the simple fact that you will see the Crane walking amongst development.

I have seen the crane in walk areas, parks, and schools around town.  The crane stands tall and bold, representing the fragile environment amongst the development of the sky line.

Tampa Chameleons- Tampa is a city for everyone: People who like warm, cold, sports, high society, fun, kid friendly and party town all rolled into one.

This city seems to change to suit everyones desires regardless of what you like, everyone loves Tampa.

I think an Ostrich is appropriate, die to the level of intolerance demonstrated by county government.

Reminds me of people who have their collective heads buried in the sand, unwilling to enter the new century.

Definitely something tropical. I love the parrot idea.

I think we should use the little lizard that are so numerous in the area.

They generate an aura of friendliness - not to mention how cute they are!

Tampa is my second home and I love it there.  I think it would be brilliant if we adopted the palmetto bug, it would truly represent Tampa and definitely drive in tourism.

As much as I would like to suggest a great egret or great blue heron, when I look at Tampa’s skyline from the south (as in your photo), I see an alligator.

The logo would be an alligator laying curved and cradled around the bay.

The buildings of downtown grow from the spine of the reptile with the body made up of the convention center and the Platt Street bridge with the head angled down towards Bayshore.

Downtown Tampa reminds me of a tiger - endangered and enigmatic, wild and captive at the same time, beautiful but not friendly, just waiting for something to happen, unaware that there are multiple forces that can either cut its throat or uplift it into a new world that will guarantee its survival.

Lets rename her REDNECK CITY, and have an annual cattle drive down Dale Mabry headed up by that big condo developer here in Tampa, DONALD TRUMP!

He could make it real fancy, and if he didnt like the way it went, he could FIRE US ALL, YUCK, YUCK!

I think that would be a better deal than this lame pirate thing we do every year.  I got a new pick up truck, and I would love to drive her in the big PARADE!!

The right animal for Tampa, would be a really big BIG BULL, because there is a lot of it going around here, and it would be a good mascot for REDNECK CITY!

We could have a BIG BULL cast in bronze with that DONALD TRUMP riding it in a rodeo and put it on the downtown mall in front of MAYOR Spam’s office!

White bengal tiger…Tampa has stripes, and Busch Gardens’ Africa themed park is here with the white tigers.

It’s also a mysterious city…you never know what is going on…it’s like looking into the eyes of a tiger.

A ‘Sloth’. The pace of growth in Tampa has been as fast as ......well, you know!

Sometimes the city of Tampa forgets what a great fishery we have here, and by using a creature from the bay to represent Tampa will show others what we prize the most; Tampa Bay waters.

Even when you drive down Bayshore Blvd you can see the resemblence of the history of Tarpon fishing we used to have here.

By making the tarpon the city animal will bring awareness to the importance of the Tarpon and hopefully in return more efforts are made to keep the Hillsborough river clean.  We need this awareness so the Hillsborough river can become the estuary it once was in the past.

Can you imagine walking down Baywalk (when it is finally done) watching tarpon roll!

One of the most beautiful sites when crossing the bridges of Tampa Bay, or enjoying a peaceful day on the water is watching the elegance and grace of the dolphins.

I have been in the Tampa area for about 6 years now.

I know one thing that I look for as I drive by all of our waterside roads is a “Dolphin” and about 90% of the time I usually see their magnificent beauty in the waters.

I feel that the Dolphin would be the perfect animal to portray our wonderful city. Come see Tampa and open your eyes upon our beautiful life filled waters!

Tampa should be the city of Cops.  They can give out tickets so well that they have to give money to other cities because they have raised too much money.

Its easier to give a ticket than go to someone’s house to stop crime.

I think Tampa resembles an octopus. Its arms reach out to help everyone. If you’re wrong, the arms of law enforcement reach out for you. Tampa reaches out for our tourists, our local people, help for low income families, but always has one arm free to help someone. Tampa has grown a lot in my 45 years here and it will continue to grow such as the octopus with more reach and more help as it grows older and wiser. Thank you Tampa.

The grouper because they’re over fished and people could help protect them from dying off because they would be educated about them. And because they are excellent as fried sandwiches.

The Great Blue and Great White Heron together. They’re both elegant and shown together they represent the diversity and tropical feel of Tampa.

They are also highly visible in the area as a constant reminder of the logo.

I have lived here for 15 years, but recently I received a crash course in politics here in Tampa. If they do something that they knew they did wrong, they will not take responsibility for it! They are also trying to make this into New York. They are doing a great job so far. Time to move! Be careful what you ask for.

I think the fishing, sparkling and pristine lakes, great beaches around housing communities in Tampa speaks of the words “Relax, Rejuvenate, and Retire Well.” These are definitely reasons for people to come over.

Tampa is definitely known as a vacation spot for the 20-30’s crowd. With Ybor, Channelside, and all the festivals directed at partying, I think the focus of the advertising should be at that target audience. Not sure an animal is the right thing for that - martini glass, cigar, maybe a mardi gras type mask.
