U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd, D-Monticello, said in an interview today that he’ll decide in January whether to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez.
He said he won’t be deterred by the prospect of facing a bigfoot candidate—Democrat Alex Sink or Republican Jeb Bush—but that he doesn’t think he and Sink should run against each other in a primary.
“She’s a very good friend of mine,” he said of Sink. “In a party where you have a limited number of people who can run statewide, I’d hate to see two of them run against each other. I’d hope that [he and she] will sit down and talk about it.”
Asked about facing Bush in a general election, he said, “That wouldn’t be a tremendous factor in my decision. ... He will have been out of politics for four years when that comes around. I would be focused on my race, not on the Republican nomination.”
Asked how much money he would need to run, he said it would be “probably a $20 million race.”
Others have said $25 million.
Boyd began a Senate primary campaign in 2004, but dropped back to run for re-election to his House seat instead. He has until the qualifying deadline in 2010 to make the decision in this race.
