Bloody Saturday In Kabul Raises Casualty Count to 17 Last Week

A bloody Saturday in Kabul raised the number of U.S. troops who died serving Operation Enduring Freedom to 15 this past week. Another two died serving Operation New Dawn.

The deaths in Kabul were the result of a suicide bomber driving a car laden with explosives into an International Security Assistance Force convoy in Kabul today killing 13 coalition personnel, NATO officials said.

In addition to the five service members, the blast killed eight ISAF civilian employees and injured several Afghans and coalition personnel as well as innocent Afghan civilian.

A second attack in southern Afghanistan that day took the lives of three more coalition personnel and wounded others when a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform shot the soldiers.

As of late Sunday night, the Department of Defense had not yet identified any of those killed Satruday.

But 10 troops who died serving OEF and OND the past week were identified:

Staff Sgt. Stephen J. Dunning, 31, of Milpitas, Calif., died Oct. 27 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan

Sgt. John A. Lyons, 26, of Seaside Park, N.J., died Oct. 26 in Ghazni province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.  He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

Sgt. 1st Class David G. Robinson, 28, of Winthrop Harbor, Ill., died Oct. 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  He was assigned to the U.S. Army Support Activity, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Sgt. Edward S. Grace, 39, of South Dartmouth, Mass., died Oct. 23 in Silver Spring, Md., from a non-combat illness.  He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Massachusetts National Guard, Braintree, Mass.

Capt. Shawn P. T. Charles, 40, of Hickory, N.C., died Oct. 23 in San Antonio, Texas, from a non-combat illness.  He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Lance Cpl. Jason N. Barfield, 22, of Ashford, Ala., died Oct. 24 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Pfc. Steven F. Shapiro, 29, of Hidden Valley Lake, Calif., died Oct. 21 in Tallil, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Airmen 1st Class Jerome D. Miller Jr., 23, of Washington, D.C. died Oct. 13 due to a non-combat related incident in Parwan province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to the 459th Security Forces Squadron, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.

Lance Cpl. Jordan S. Bastean, 19, of Pekin, Ill., died Oct. 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.  He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Sgt. Paul A. Rivera, 26, of Round Rock, Texas, died Oct. 22, in Logar province, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered in a vehicle rollover during an attack by enemy forces.  He was assigned to the 709th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, Hohenfels, Germany.

There have now been 1,811 casualties in Operation Enduring Freedom and 4,479 casualties in Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn.
