Anti-tax group faces fine for tardy campaign report

An anti-tax group that helped defeat Hillsborough County’s transit tax initiative last year is facing a $680 fine for filing a campaign finance report late.

The Florida Elections Commission will consider the fine against No Tax for Tracks – a Tampa Bay area group that fought to keep county voters from passing the transit tax last year – at its Nov. 15 meeting in Tallahassee. The group has appealed the fine.

According to the FEC complaint, the Riverview-based political action committee was 5 days late filing its quarterly finance report, which was due on Oct. 1, 2010.

In a letter to the FEC, Stacy Feiler, the committee’s chairwoman, attributed the tardy filing to confusion over the deadline and argues that state statutes on filing dates are too vague. She asked the commission to reduce the fine.

“This fine is unduly harsh on a small grassroots PAC staffed by citizens who are not political professionals,” Feiler wrote.

Hillsborough elections office reports show the committee – which raised about $25,000 towards the anti-rail campaign – is still active.
