The American Conservative Union, which built its reputation as a yardstick of conservatism by rating members of Congress on their votes, is about to announce similar ratings of members of the Florida Legislature.
ACU Chairman Al Cardenas, a veteran Republican Party activist and fundraiser, will announce the ratings of legislators in Tallahassee Tuesday, according to ACU spokeswoman Kristy Campbell.
Campbell said the ACU looked at votes on about 19 bills in the Florida House and Senate during the 2011 legislative, “issues we considered litmus tests for conservatives,” such the controversial measure on teacher merit pay and a proposal to put spending caps on the state ballot.
In the first year of this new program, the ACU will rate state legislators in the battleground states of Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.
The ACU lists legislators as “Defenders of Liberty” if they get a 100 percent score, or “ACU Conservatives” if they get 80 percent. It also labels those who score a zero—in Florida, they’ll be called “True Liberals of The Sunshine State.”
Campbell said more legislators got good ratings in Florida than in other states.
