1 in 5 Florida Republicans calls self “moderate”

A poll of Florida Republicans says about one in five calls himself a “moderate” as opposed to “conservative” or “very conservative,” and indentified Pam Bondi of Tampa as the most popular Florida Cabinet member.

The poll also showed Sen. Marco Rubio as by far the state’s most popular GOP officeholder, and showed Scott with nearly 70 percent favorable opinions, but 28 percent unfavorable—somewhat high for a new governor among voters of his own party.

In the poll, done by the Gainesville-based GOP polling and consulting firm War Room Logistics, 21 percent of respondents, who all said they were registered Republicans, identified themselves as moderates; 45 percent called themselves “very conservative” and 32 percent said “somewhat conservative.”

Bondi was viewed favorably by 48 percent of the respondents and unfavorably by just under 13 percent, a 4-1 favorable-unfavorable ratio.

By comparison, Agriculture Secretary Adam Putnam got a 27 percent favorable rating and a 3-1 favorability ratio, and Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater 27 percent and a 2-1 favorability ratio. Scott had about a 2-1 favorability ratio.

Rubio, with 82 percent favorable and 13 percent unfavorable opinions, had a 6-1 ratio.

Pollster Alex Patton said the results indicate that even among Republicans, Scott is a polarizing figure. He said Rubio is the state’s GOP “rock star,” and that Bondi benefits from being from Tampa, the state’s largest media market, in building statewide name recognition.
