What makes Pasco County Special

Pasco’s Generosity

What makes Pasco great for me is the existence of a large number of social and community service organizations, which provide invaluable assistance to countless Pasco residents in dire need.

These include church-affiliated charities, such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society;, ethnic associations, such as the several lodges of the Sons of Italy; numerous veterans groups - the Marine Corps League for one; various civic and fraternal societies, hobbyists and enthusiasts of most any ilk or persuasion, etc.

Disparate though they may seem, they all have one characteristic in common: Their members are caring individuals who give tirelessly of their valuable time to help those less fortunate in our county, regardless of age, gender, religion, or race.

Thanks to all who serve in these ways to help make Pasco great!

Dade City: Where Somebody Knows Your Name

I have often thought about what I like about Dade City. Having been born there in 1933 and moving away and then back about 45 years ago, it just seems like home.

I like that I can walk down the street of go into a restaurant and EXPECT to see someone I know. It isn’t a surprise. I don’t know of any town in Central Florida that has changed less in the last 50 years than Dade City has. For those of us who remember way back, there used to be a row of large oak trees in front of where Wachovia bank is, with a brick drive on each side. People would park under their shade while doing their shopping.  The people are all very friendly, and (the town) definitely has a laid-back lifestyle.

Love Those Snowbirds

Some of the things that make Pasco great are the snowbirds. These people have worked all their lives, sacrificed and saved, so that one day they could spend their winters in the South, away from the cold and snow. With them they have brought years of knowledge and experience that they enjoy sharing with others. Some want to just relax and enjoy their surroundings. Others like to participate in the many activities in their parks and in the area. Others like to lead projects and head committees. Unlike tourists, the snowbirds can pick and choose what they would like to do. If it is cool and rainy, we can skip an event and attend next year. We can always depend on things happening at the same time and place. For example: the kumquat festival is always the last Saturday in January; the car show is the second weekend in November, and the flea market in Zephyrhills is open on Tuesday and Thursday. Regular activities are always changing and getting better. New things are always appearing. No matter how long you live here, you will always be able to find something new or different to do. We are thankful for the people that live here year-round, for the government officials, for the store owners and the people who generate services for us. We are not tourists; we are not rich financially. We cannot afford $50 + a day for entertainment, but we are rich in the friends we make and the things we share. We are thankful for the ability to be called “snowbirds.”

So Much to See and Do

I find diversity to be the most special thing about Pasco County. I live in the west part of the county, where there is always something going on and always something to do. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to visit, as well as outdoor activities.  I can dash to the beach or relax at my favorite café or even catch a show, all within just a couple of minutes. But then, I get to take a leisurely drive across the county to the east every day to work. There I am greeted with the wide open spaces of acres and acres of pristine farm land. I am welcomed to soak up the rich history that Pasco County has to offer by cattle and orange groves. I can marvel at the rolling hills that are so rare in Florida but are so much a part of the identity of east Pasco.  Although some think I am crazy to drive such a distance each day, I feel very fortunate to have the best of both worlds all in one place.
