It’s that time of year that college students love and law enforcement hates. Spring Break starts March 6 and runs through April 18.
It may sound quaint, but take a minute to remind your kids – no matter how old they are - of these beach safety tips:
Swim with a buddy so one of you can get help if the other has trouble.
Pay attention to beach warnings. Red flags mean there is high surf or a strong current and may not be safe for swimming.
Know about rip currents. If you get swept up by a rip current, swim with the current perpendicular to the beach, making your way back to shore gradually.
Do the stingray shuffle. Slide your feet side to side in the sand to avoid stepping on stingrays.
If your kids are boating or water skiing, here are some more tips to remember:
Wear a life jacket.
Keep a safe distance from other watercraft.
Have a plan. Let somebody on land know where you’re headed and when you expect to return.
Drive responsibly. Don’t weave through other boats or risk jumping the wake of another craft and crashing into it.
Last but not least, have fun!
