Mary Shedden - Take Two ... And Call Your Mom

Make healthy food choices a game for kids

Here’s a way to get your little ones to love healthy food choices. Make it a game.

The blogger 108easyhealth.com suggests playing a word image game with your child to show them that fruits and veggies can be as much a treat as a processed glob of refined sugar.

The activity involves cutting up pictures from the supermarket circular ad in your Tampa Tribune and having them create a meal using the different food groups. You talk about the choices as you glue the “foods” onto paper plates. The result: they’re learning about good choices and entertained at the same time. Woo Hoo!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture also has some helpful ideas on teaching preschoolers about food choices. Think of it as a really tiny food pyramid.
