My kids love to read, and now some of their favorite stories are coming to the stage! The David A. Straz Center’s Wee Folks and Kid Time Series kick off next month.
The Wee Folks Series is designed for preschoolers ages 3 to 5. The series features four shows. Tickets cost $8.50 per show, or you can get all four shows for $25.50.
The Kid Time Series is designed for school-aged kids ages 5 to 11. Tickets cost $9.50 to $13.50 per show, or you can get all four shows for a package price ranging from $28.50 to $40.50. You can also purchase a family package which includes four tickets to each of the four shows for $98.88, $119.68 or $140.48.
Here’s a look at the Wee Folks schedule:
Oct. 10: Stone Soup
This wonderful story about how a village chips in to make a soup tasty and nourishing comes to life on the stage. We already love the book, and have turned it into a great game of “What would you add to the soup?” It’s always a great way to distract my kids when we’re waiting in a line or riding in the car.

Jan: 16: If You Give A Cat A Cupcake
If you haven’t read this book to your kids, go grab it now. My kids also love “If You Take A Mouse To The Movies” and “If You Give A Moose A Muffin.”

March 6: Shana Banana
Have trouble getting your kids in bed? Award-winning national children’s musician Shana Banana might be able to help. Get ready to have fun singing about all the rituals of bedtime, like tooth-brushing, getting into your PJs and storytime.
April 10: The Frog Prince
Watch as this magical tale comes to life with its lessons of compassion and staying true to yourself.

Here’s the Kid Time schedule:
Oct. 17: Pigeon Party
My kids love “The Pigeon Wants A Puppy” and the other pigeon tales. In this show, meet the friendly hotdog man, Duckie and Knuffle Bunny as Pigeon learns valuable life lessons.

Nov: 28: Santa’s Holiday Review
This fast-paced, rollicking musical showcases dances, songs and stories from Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and more holidays in a fun show that is designed to have your toes tapping and your hands clapping.

Feb. 27: The Jungle Book
My kids already know the story of Mowgli from both the book and Disney movie. Now they can watch as the boy raised by wolves takes the stage with his beloved friends Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear. I’m humming the tune to “Bare Necessities” as I think about it!

April 9: Fancy Nancy and other stories
I haven’t read this book, so here’s the publicity info: Meet Nancy, who believes that more is ALWAYS better when it comes to being fancy. From the top of her tiara down to her sparkly studded shoes, Nancy is determined to teach her family a thing or two about being fancy. Nancy just doesn’t understand why she’s the only one who appreciates the value of frilly accessories and a prodigious vocabulary. How Nancy transforms her parents and little sister makes for a story that is funny and warm – with or without the frills.
