An art show featuring local artists, live and silent auctions, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will raise money for Florida Boxer Rescue. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and the event gears up at 6:30 p.m. at the Art Institute of Tampa, 4401 N. Himes Ave.

Calling All Cover Cats


Your cat could be the monthly pinup, or the cover, of Feline Folks’ 2009 calendar, which benefits low-cost spay and neuter for homeless cats. Winners get their photo published with their name, plus a free calendar.

By Aug. 31, send a photo that shows only a cat (or cats) - no dogs, no people and no text - to info@felinefolks.org. It must be a digital file, 300 dpi, 8 by 11 inches, 95 percent quality jpeg and less than 32 MB. People can enter more than once, and should include their cat’s name, if it’s a pet, and contact information.

Scratch My Back


The 12th annual Scratch My Back Concert to benefit the Humane Society of Tampa Bay is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Skipper’s Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. Hear music by The Quivering Rhythm Hounds (5 to 6 p.m.), Sharon and the Boys (6:15 to 7:15) and the Johnny G. Lyon Band (7:30 to 9). Admission is $7; free for ages 10 and younger. Good Dog


Pit bulls and pit bull mixes will get some special tutoring at 9 a.m. May 31 for the Canine Good Citizen test offered by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay. They can take the test at 11 a.m.

This program was designed by the American Kennel Club to reward dogs who have good manners. The SPCA hopes to certify Bay area pit bulls in hopes of changing stereotypes about the breed. Schedule an appointment for the test by going to www.spcatampabay.org or calling (727) 586-3591, ext. 167.

Testing costs $10; those who pass get an AKC certificate. The test will be held at SPCA Tampa Bay, 9099 130th Ave. N., Largo.

Pet Palooza!


Visit Camden apartment complexes this month and you’re likely to walk into a party. Through the end of the month, pet parties at various complexes will feature adoptable pets from the Humane Society of Tampa Bay; microchipping coupons for animals adopted during the events; food; drinks; prizes; dog training tips; and more.

Admission is free; leashed, friendly pets welcome. Camden communities accept large and small pets. Anyone who signs a new pet lease this month will pay no pet deposit and only half the pet fee; plus, Camden will donate $50 to the Humane Society.

Tuxes And Tails


Come in short tails, long tails or bobbed tails to the sixth annual black-tie-optional fundraiser for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay.

Kitty First Aid


Feline Folks, a nonprofit organization dedicated to humanely managing cat populations, plans Cat First Aid, a free workshop, at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

If you have a stuffed toy cat at home, please bring it with you for practice. The location is South Shore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way (off 19th Avenue Northeast), Ruskin. Volunteer Orientation


Hillsborough County Animal Services, 440 Falkenburg Road, Tampa, will hold orientation sessions for people interested in volunteering. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Volunteers walk and socialize with the animals, wash and groom them, take digital photos of them, help look for lost pets, and escort potential adopters to the kennel.

Benefit Dog Wash


Get your dog shampooed and towel dried between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at the sixth annual dog wash at Medicine River Animal Hospital, 11141 U.S. 19 N., Suite 402, Clearwater. Cost is a $15 donation to the animal charity of your choice.

Representatives from Southeastern Guide Dogs Inc., Coastal Poodle Rescue, Save Our Strays, Florida Doggie Paws Rescue and Great Pyrenees Rescue will be on hand, among others.

Snip And Chip


Through May 30, any pet spayed or neutered at the Animal Coalition of Tampa’s Spay-Neuter Clinic will get a free microchip with the clip. Microchips provide a permanent form of identification that can ensure you’re reunited with your pet, whether it runs away or you’re separated in an emergency, such as a hurricane.

Appointments are required; call (813) 250-3900. Current rabies vaccination is also required, but it’s available at the clinic, 1719 W. Lemon St., Tampa. Spay-neuter surgeries cost $40 to $95, or less for low-income Hillsborough County residents. Go to actampa.org for information.
