You know it’s hot when the squirrel passes out on your freshly stocked birdfeeder

At about 3 p.m. every day this time of year, the sun turns the full glare of its love on my backyard. It’s so hot out there, I don’t step a foot out the door unless absolutely necessary.

Yesterday about 3, I happened to glance out the window and this is what I saw.

That squirrel was just sprawled there, comatose. The only movement was his tail, and that only when a whisper of breeze made it flutter.

I headed out into the oven with my camera, pretty sure he’d jump up and run. But he was as oblivious as my husband on a Saturday afternoon on the couch.

Then I started to worry he was dead … or dying. Yeek. Had he climbed up to my birdfeeder for one last, delicious supper, only to find he didn’t have the strength left to eat it? As annoying as squirrels can be, that was sad.

I started to go back inside and let nature take its course when the squirrel suddenly hopped up.

And when he started acting like a very normal squirrel, I quit worrying.

And now you know, when I complain about my full-sun backyard, even the squirrels agree.

We kept our feeders empty this weekend—and got a whole lot more work done. No distracting squirrels to fret over (or mess with, as we did a couple of weeks ago).

They left our yard pretty much alone—although I spotted a few carefully crossing the back yard with some sort of fruit in their mouths. They go from the oak trees in one neighbors yard, across our yard, and over to the oaks on the other side. Our new wood fence only slows them down a little!

That squirrel is a real Floridian, bathing in the sun taking a nap. They really are cute, but I hate them. You know what I might not hate them, Saturday one came down from the orange tree and grabbed a luber and ran back up the tree eating it. I did not know they were carnivious? Pumpkin

He’s just enjoying a beautiful spot for relaxation.  The great food, the colorful scenery, what more could a squirrel want?  The pink stool with the blue flowered pot and pink portaluca(?) is just beautiful against all the greenery and Mexican petunias.  There’s even a dove enjoying the ambiance from the top of the fence. I’m so glad you braved the heat to capture that picture.

So the squirrel was just taking a “cat nap?”  love them or hate them you got to admit these little beggars are smart. And hogging the feeder I bet the birds are not amused ....“Chip”

This is not for the weak stomach, but this is what the squirrel has entomology.ifas.ufl.edu/slansky/botfly. Pumpkin

Pumkin I just looked at the link you provided. That is a bit scary! I know this sounds bad but this guy needs to be “put down” before the eggs hatch and spread. Read it for yourself I hate to see an animal suffer putting this guy down will save others from his fate…“Chip”

I was just concered about this spreading. Cats, dogs, peacocks, people….“Chip”

Lumpy squirrels, who knew? Poor thing. Thanks for the info Pumpkin. I’ve got a bug problem myself. I am here to tell you why folks do not make bottle trees out of dead tree’s. Bugs eat the wood ( I am loathe to utter the dreaded word——termites) Now I am afraid to dig up my little dead lemon tree because then the bugs may need a new source of food. So off to Lowe’s I go to arm myself with every termite poison I can get my hands one. Once I feel I’ve killed off the invaders I’ll dig it up, bag it up and send it far away from my house. Rebar bottle tree’s from now on.

Penny, I agree, who knew? I was at a bible study meeting just Monday night and a friend noticed lumpy squirrels in Pasco county about 4 years ago and looked it up. She kept talking about botflies and we all were just cringing. Then you mentioned your squirrel may have been shot with bb’s and I took another look and said botfly!!!!!!!!!!! Who would have know????Pumpkin

Joyce, Please tell us more about your garden. It looks like you have a very big garden and yours beds are very pretty. How long have you been gardening? Thank you for sharing. Pumpkin

Yes, Joyce’s garden does look quite interesting. I would love to know if that is a yellow ground orchid in one of the pictures.  Are those roses?  So pretty.  The Mexican bush sage is beautiful.  I’m jealous because mine is not blooming.  Thanks for alerting us to the new pics, Penny.

Bot flies?! I’ve never heard of them before. That was very interesting information on the link you provided, Pumpkin.

Squirrels, birds, peacocks, friends and neighbors….who WOULD’NT love lounging in Penny’s garden?

Nice photos, Joyce. Your garden appears to be thriving despite the heat! I thought I saw some roses, too. I like the way you incorporated the yard art.

Somethimes while in the car Diane will spot a garden and we will stop and look and have meet some nice people like that to. I have some stuff I started that I can transplant but as hot and dry as it is right now I am holding off even my hot pepers are having a hard time. I love Joyce’s garden. Everything is so neat and tidy and looks lovely. I am a huge fan of Suns and have started my own fence Sun wall. They have to have really good faces for me to consider them though. How about you Joyce?

Posted by (Joyce) on September 18, 2010

@Susan Gillespie - Susan. I love all of my sun faces. I’m always on the lookout for more. But I’m thinking about switching to Moons or Parrots - something tropical?

Posted by (Joyce) on September 18, 2010

@kgardens - That is a yellow ground orchid. The only one that made it through the winter. I had about four of them in different colors. I’m hoping for them to survive again.

@Joyce—-I love Moons too so I have do not problem with the Sun/Moon combo. I grew up in Akron, Ohio. There is a fantastic artist there named Don Drumm. He is famous for his Sun faces and I adore his work, so besides the fact I am a Leo, ruled by the Sun, I really love Don Drumm Suns ( I have them in my house) so all other Suns are up against his wonderful work. http://www.dondrummstudios.com/
