Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.

Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

You can take the girl out of the garden but ...

I was away from my garden for a few days this past week, while I visited New York City for the first time ever.

Well, you can take the girl out of the garden, but you can’t take the gardener out of the girl … or something like that. Even in that very urban setting, I found reminders of my favorite pastime, including this rooftop garden, which was as green and gorgeous as many I see here – with a little bit of color, too.

Those rooftop gardens are rare. But I did find a whole stack of these gardens in a box at a shop in Grand Central Station.

They look like this when you get them going:

Yeah, not so great. But there were some adorable garden tools at the same shop. These trowels:

And this pruner (or “gardening scissors”):

Don’t know that they’d hold up when trimming my bougainvillea …

More tempting were these purses that look like watering cans. (I’m on a watering can kick … I’m thinking about collecting them.)

Somehow, I managed to avoid purchasing any of the above. I saved the green for plants in my own suburban jungle!

It’s good to see they have a gardening sense of humor in NY. The scissors are a hoot.

I visited NYC for the first time last year and loved it! I didn’t happen to see any garden shops, but did go to “Tavern on the Green” which was surrounded by beautiful gardens and topiaries! Nice to see the greenery in the “big city.”

I spent so much money on getting to NYC, and staying in NYC, I didn’t spend much once I was there. (Shocking, I know.)

Sadly, plans to get to a couple of botanical gardens didn’t pan out, but we did get to Central Park (lots of green, not many flowers) and to a lovely park called Madison Square Park. New Yorkers do know how to make the most of a little space!
