If you’ve eaten red meat within the past two years, your health could be at risk.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has ordered the largest beef recall in U.S. history—143 million pounds from a California slaughterhouse.
The recall affects beef products from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co.
An estimated 37 million pounds of recalled beef has gone to school lunch programs. Officials believe that most of the recalled meat probably has already been eaten.
So far, no illnesses have been linked to the beef.
Operations at Westland/Hallmark were suspended after an undercover video from The Humane Society of the United States showed crippled and sick animals being abused. Workers were shown kicking, shocking and otherwise abusing “downer” animals that were apparently too sick or injured to walk into the slaughterhouse.
Two employees have been fired. The investigation continues.
