Penny Carnathan

Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

Kim Franke-Folstad

Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.

Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

Vermont—It’s not just cows and cheese and maple syrup

As Florida is to flamingos and palms, Vermont is to cows and maple syrup.

We’ve got more than a few houses painted flamingo pink in Tampa, so it’s only natural Vermont would have houses saluting its celebrated critter.

We spotted this house driving across the very rural northern part of the state. The farther east we went, the more beautiful foliage we saw.

We were visiting my sister in the Northeast Kingdom, a rugged part of Vermont near the Canadian border. Here, the towns are few and far between and comprise just a few hundred hardy residents. The area is notorious among smugglers, because it’s so sparsely populated and remote. Just the other day, the subject of an international dragnet was arrested in little Derby Line, about 5 miles from my sister’s home.

Suffice to say, residents here don’t mess around with safety.

(This was at my sister’s house!)

If you want to be more inviting than threatening, here’s another beautiful concept. Look how the flowers echo the colors of the house. (It’s hard to tell in this photo, but the door trim is pale yellow.)

And to end on a “fall gardens we’ll never have” note, here’s one more pic:

Penny, I love the Cow house,Compost sign, and pumpkin. My friend asked me to join them next week for a trip to NC and I can’t go. I just love Fall up north. Thanks for sharing. Janice

It sound’s like you are just a little bit home sick
it all looks so nice I don’t blame you. one year I
must see it for myself. My wife “Diane” grew up in Indiana so she has seen her share of fall color’s but she misses it. I think that is why she wanted her pumpkin’s so bad. I have everything on track for our fall garden, my corn is doing great! I just love the sweet honey smell of corn! now it is just a waiting game to see what come’s up ...“Chip”
