Florida teachers are losing their job protection and will see their pay based heavily on student test scores.
A panel of Manatee County school officials will meet on Saturday to talk about these and other changes in the new, so-called Student Success Act.
The bill passed in the Florida Legislature on a party line vote, with Republicans arguing that drastic changes were needed to boost student performance.
Democrats countered that it was a hastily conceived measure that would devastate teacher morale and require the districts to spend a lot of extra money on testing.
USF Sarasota-Manatee’s College of Education is hosting the panel discussion on Saturday, along with the Florida Association of Teacher Educators.
It starts at 8:30 a.m. in the Selby Auditorium on the USFSM campus, 8350 Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.
It’s open to the public but go here to RSVP if you plan to attend.
