Doctors seem to be optimistic about Patrick Swayze’s health after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He is not expected to die within weeks, contrary to published reports.

According to Moffitt, here are some facts about pancreatic cancer:

  • Smoking and health history (long-standing diabetes, chronic pancreatitis) can affect the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
  • Possible signs of pancreatic cancer include jaundice, pain and weight loss.
  • Pancreatic cancer is difficult to detect and diagnose early because there aren’t any noticeable signs or symptoms in the early stages.
  • Tests that examine the pancreas are used to detect, diagnose and stage pancreatic cancer. This includes chest X-rays, CAT scans, MRIs and laparascopies.
  • Certain factors affect prognosis and treatment options (whether the tumor can be removed and the stage of the cancer).
  • Call 1-888-MOFFITT if you have questions.
