Penny Carnathan

Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.

Kim Franke-Folstad

Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.

Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

Sorta secret plant sale should make for one very happy New Year’s

Thank you Janice “Pumpkin” Vogt for making my holiday happy!!

A couple weeks ago, Janice stumbled upon a super sale with lots of unusual plants. She was so excited, she emailed me that very day.

“This was a great day,” she wrote. “I was going over to my plant mentor’s/Sunday school teacher house this afternoon to help her decorate for Christmas and I see a plant sell sign, so I stop.

“This lady has a yard full of REALLY strange plants, all 3-gallon for $10. I got goldfinger plant, Chinese rainbell, perfume jasmine, bridal veil, a really funky angel trumpet, Chinese hat plant.”

Here’s her goldfinger, a nice vine for shade.

Never hesitant about satisfying her curiousity, Janice interrogated the seller. Turns out she works with one of my favorite plant fair vendors (OK, maybe THE favorite), George Griepenburg of Dade City. I’ve gotten some of my coolest, Old Florida-style plants from him, including Irish petticoat and blue butterfly clerodendron.

Cindy told Janice she planned another front-yard sale over New Year’s, and Janice (wonderful, wonderful woman that she is) emailed me today to remind me.

I called Cindy, who said it’s not a huge sale—she’ll have about 150 plants, more variety, not so many of each kind. The sale starts at 9:30 or 10 a.m. (“Whenever I get up and out there”) on Saturday and Sunday. The plants are all from George’s greenhouse and prices will be $10 to $15 for 3-gallon pots.

She’s located at the corner of Country Club Drive and Marjory Avenue in the Forest Hills area of North Tampa. Watch for signs. (From I-275, take Fowler Avenue west, past Florida Avenue. Fowler’s name changes to Country Club, and you’ll hit Marjory just before the roundabout at the North Boulevard intersection.)

“I’ll have a lot of winter color,” she says. That includes three different types of buddleias (butterfly bush).

And Duranta erecta, also known as golden dewdrop. (You may be familiar with the newer variety called Duranta gold mound.)

Thank you again, Janice, for the great tip!

The rain certainly helps. But the more I listened to the news the more I knew I had to get the sheets out. There’s always too much to cover so I have to choose who gets covered and who doesn’t. I hate these freezes ruining all my hard work.

I hope to see everyone at the plant sale tomorrow. The regular prices when they are at the shows are about $25 to $30.00 for each plant. Plus they have plants you can only find at shows. Pumpkin

I can’t believe I’m going to say this…I am kinda’ sad that I am leaving on a CRUISE today.  I’ll miss the plant sale that sounds like a just perfect one, and I’ll have to trust my college age son to uncover/recover plants.  Really, the cruise will be wonderful, but when I get home? Well, I’m putting cuttings for the seed swap on my porch and watering them really well, so that I will hopefully have them for the seed/plant swap when I get back.  I can’t believe I’m leaving when we will have our first real freeze.  I know I’m crazy to feel so conflicted about a wonderful vacation but I thought perhaps someone from here would understand.  smile  Kay

It look likes George and Cindy has got a dream job I have never meet them but I think I will have to look them up. I am hopeful Diane will feel up to the plant sale that and I need a easier to read temp. gauge mine is small and hard to read. the 3am checks are hard enough as it is. I worked the night shift for years and I can tell you at 3am is the coldest it is going to get in a 24hour period unless a cold front passes after. last night 35 at 3am . I hope to see you at the plant sale everyone ...“Chip”

Kay, I understand, too! Enjoy the cruise - I’m sure you will have a great time.

Thank you Penny and Janice for the info on Cindy’s plant sale! I went this morning and she was very nice and was happy to tell me about the plants she had. I bought a walking iris and Bolivian suset (which thrives in the shade and has bright and beautiful orange blooms). Each plant was only $10.00. She had some very interesting choices and I would’ve bought more had I not promised myself an after-Christmas budget!
