Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.
Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.
Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

FOD Janice Vogt loves to decorate her house and garden for the holidays. Any holiday. Brazilian Independence Day. Kiss A Pig Day. I’m talking every holiday. So no surprise she goes gangbusters at Christmas.
She lives in a charming old section of Seminole Heights, and her old-fashioned, retro touches make you feel like you’re stepping back into the 1950s or ‘60s.
Like the rest of us, at first she didn’t think she had a lot of natural Christmas red flora in the garden. But when she started to look around, she discovered she has plenty. This is Fasciata primera, a bromeliad she picked up at a Tampa Garden Club plant sale.

And here’s Tiffany, another bromeliad from that garden club sale.

Who knew roses bloom this time of year? Here’s a perfect Florida snowball, Pascali hybrid tea rose. (Janice swears by Mills Magic Rose Mix Fertilizer for her roses and all her plants.)

Janice is the master of the garden art vignette, and I love this one.

Take a good look at the tiny terra cotta manger scene in the middle of the potting table. What a perfect detail. Where did it come from, Janice?

And how’ bout this retro snowman statue? Janice says she found this gem at TJ Maxx a couple years ago.

And another snowman we need to get to know better! I’m guessing she or her husband (the very handy and cheerful Grumpy) painted this on an old, up North-style storm door. How appropo. The door came from Janice’s favorite antiques store, Baker & Co. General Store on North Howard Avenue. (I’ve been there—love it, too.)

Anyone who does this much dressing up cannot resist attacking the cat. Thank goodness Pooh is used to Ms. Pumpkin’s eccentricities. Our parting shot, the jolly Pooh:

Beautiful Janice. Love that garden gate and I am particularly fond of the rose. I have some blooming as well but not near as pretty as this one. I will have to try your rose food.

Wow. I love the idea of decorating the garden for holidays. Janice, you have done a fantastic job. I really am impressed with your potting bench. Did someone make it for you? I need to update my Christmas list to include one of those. Kay

Oh you’ve added some pics of Janice’s awesome garden. I am drooling over the potting bench too. A gardeners dream. And I must get to that antique store. I am looking for an old window like that to do a glass on glass mosaic. I’ve never tried that yet, why not.
And Pooh—-what a trooper. Love it. Everything is beautiful Janice and sets such a happy tone.

WOW. That’s decked out! In a good way though. I love the tiny little manger scene! I feel sorry for the cat though. He looks slightly annoyed. Haha he’ll get over it! I like the second bromeliad. Its got at lot of bright color. Also, who was it that had the purple tomatoes?
Another plant that will sometimes have red is the Pine Cone Ginger. However, mine died back upon trasplanting so I have no pictures to show.

I am glad you guys enjoyed my garden at Christmas.
Susan, If you go to Baker and Co. tell her Janice sent you and maybe you will get a special tour. Her shop is a restored cigar warehouse.
Chip, I think a train running through a garden would be really cool.
Penny, The nativity is my favorite find ever, I bought all of them and gave as gifts a few years ago. Merry Christmas Janice

The Habitat store is exactly where I thought I would find something like that window. Thanks Penny.
Can we all borrow Janice’s husband—-or put him in the potting bench business?
If I go antiquing I will put Baker and Co on my list and mention your name Janice. Thanks

Janice, you have done it again. Your garden pictures for Christmas help get me inspired and in the Christmas spirit. That terra cotta nativity scene is a great way to bring Christmas into the garden to enjoy.
Merry Christmas Shirlene

Just came back from the extension office. the new U.S.D.A. canning guide’s are in and I picked up my copy $12.00 buck’s not bad and they have a room full of pamflets free, the gardens on the grounds are worth the trip if you ask me. But the surprize to me was boots! he is still there how long are they going to keep him Susan?..“Chip”
Posted by (Iluvpumpkins) on December 23, 2009
Susan, My husband’s nickname is Grumpy so I don’t know if really want to borrow him.
Shirlene, Welcome to The Dirt!
Penny, I am going to look for you a nativity next year. It would truly be a please to give you one. That Home Depot is north or south Dale Mabry?
Chip, I have some really nice canned jars that I use to decorate my glass kitchen cabinets. They placed the potatoes and green beans in the jars like art. Sounds silly but they are really pretty. I will send penny a picture of them. Pumpkin

Chip—-they are keeping Boots until the end of the year. In fact someone wanted to buy it but I wasn’t willing to give that one up. Am I crazy?

Thank you Penny and Janice for the warm welcome to the blog. I hope everyone has a great Christmas. I did meet Penny at Janices house and at the outing in Riverview (Farmer Ricks) which I really enjoyed. I wanted to blog back then but my computer was out of order at the time. Thank goodness my son has fixed it so that I can read the Dirt again.

Janice, your Christmas garden is festive, colorful and outright beautiful! I’m with many others here who love the manger scene. (I believe I mentioned on an earlier blog how envious I am of your potting bench. Way to go, Grumpy!) I will have to check out Baker and Co as well as the Habitat for Humanity store in my search for a window or door frame to paint.
Boys and their trains! (A couple of weeks ago, my hubby came home with a basic Choo-Choo setup for around the Christmas Tree!) Nice find, Chip. I hope you’ll still be able to blog from the doghouse!

Welcome to the Dirt, Shirl! Good to see you here. I think I may have met you at Farmer Rick’s as well. We’d love to see some photos of your garden. (Being the garden voyeurs that we are!)
I hope that all of you had a very merry Christmas! Looking forward to a beautiful bloomin’ new year!!
