I finally got a sneak preview of The September Issue, a documentary about the larger-than-life Vogue editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. The film follows Wintour and her team of talented - and sometimes wacky - editors as they created the 2007 September issue of Vogue magazine, an issue that weighed nearly five pounds, sold 13 million copies and remains the single largest issue of a magazine ever published.
“People are frightened of fashion so they put it down…they mock it. There’s something about fashion that can make people very nervous,” says Wintour at the beginning of the movie.
From that moment on, the legendary editor allows the audience a glimpse behind those ubiquitous trademark sunglasses. And if James Brown was the hardest working man in show business, Wintour is surely the hardest working woman in fashion.
Without giving too much away (I hate spoilers), here are a few highlights:
* Anna really isn’t a b*&^%, she’s just doing her job.
* Anna surrounds herself with “brilliant” editors, like Grace Coddington.
* Grace, who used to be a model, challenges Anna, but she knows far she can push her (it keeps things very interesting).
* After more than 20 years at Vogue, Grace is still very sensitive about her work (not a good idea if you work for Anna).
* Andre Leon Talley (American editor-at-large for Vogue) looks like a wizard. He doesn’t like to work out, but he loves to work Louis Vuitton—even on the tennis court.
* Anna was a fan of designer Thakoon Panichgul BEFORE the first lady (and he’s just as cute as he can be in the movie).
* If a camera guy is going to be featured in Vogue and he’s fat, Anna suggests he go to the gym, or be photoshopped. Grace wants to let him be fat (just don’t tell Anna).
* Actress Sienna Miller (September’s 2007 cover model) “has a lot of teeth.” And she needs to do something with her hair.
* Anna’s daughter, Bee Schafer, doesn’t think fashion is ALL THAT (a wistful moment in the movie). And neither does the rest of Anna’s family.
* Just because a photo is beautiful doesn’t mean jack…to Anna; It’s all about the clothes.
* If you’re a photo editor, a photographer, a stylist or a designer at Vogue, your feelings will be hurt.
* Anna likes to cross her arms—a lot.
* There’s always a way to wear fur.
The September Issue opens in theaters Friday.
