Sex and the City gals breathe new life into trends we love and hate

Yes, it’s finally here, Sex the City: The Movie. (I’m sure many of you practically imploded in anticipation). I saw it Tuesday night (don’t hate, being the fashion and beauty reporter has its perks).

Want to find out if Big and Carrie finally make it to the altar? You’ll have to see the movie. There are no spoilers here. But I will tell you Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristen Davis) and Miranda Cynthia Nixon) work some fierce looks on the silver screen.

The ladies have made quite an imprint on the fashion scene over the years. And they’ll do it again, no doubt, when the movie opens. Many of the fashion trends have been a around a long time. But when one of these women wears it, it suddenly becomes new again.

Here’s a look at some of my favorite – and unfortunate - fashion influences from Sex and the City and the fabulous four.

Nameplate necklace – We’ve been sporting nameplate necklaces since we were tweens. A gold name necklace was the most-requested gift on our ”Quinceanera” list (I still have mine). For some reason, the rest of the population didn’t think they were cool until Carrie wore one.

Exposed bra-straps – I don’t care who you are, there’s nothing attractive about baring your bra-strap; particularly under a classy evening dress (Carrie continues the tradition in the movie version). If you can afford a pair of Manolo Blahnik’s, you can afford a strapless bra.

Labels – The gals of Sex and the City don’t wear jeans. But they love designer duds. We’ve paid attention to labels since Jordache, Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt adorned our booty pockets back in the day.

Tube tops – They will always be the fashion of choice at neighborhood barbecues and the local roller skating rink. But be careful, this style screams “wardrobe malfunction.”

Fanny packs - You have to put stuff somewhere, right? Luxury labels like Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton carry fanny packs. And you can find them selling for several hundred dollars. I’m sorry, but fanny pack by any other name (or designer) would still be lame.

Any SATC fashion influences you love or hate?

I hear you on the fanny pack situation! Oh NO! The biggest trends that I’ve seen come out of Sex and the City has been the “which one are you” classifications! I’m totally Carrie...through and through. I’ve also noticed that more woman are hanging out in packs of four or more...hmmmmm.
