Penny’s a Nurture And Hold (NAH): Nah, I won’t pull that out yet, it’s still got a green shoot. She likes dragonflies, lady bugs and new stuff only after weeding, pruning and fertilizing.
Kim’s a Want It Now (WIN): Everything pretty, everything now. She will resort to full-spectrum insecticides in desperate situations, and believes it’s her duty and right to buy new plants every weekend.
Both advocate Plant Choice (SOMEthing besides crotons. Please!), lots of color and low maintenance. We don’t agree on everything, but we’re smart enough to learn from each other - and from you.

Susan Gillespie’s planter, Boots, won third place in the Hillsborough County Recycled Yard Art Contest!
Yay Boots (and Susan)!
Susan gets a first place from The Dirt—and, judging from the comments—all Friends of the Dirt. But technically speaking (as in, those who walk away with the big checks) there were a couple others.
People’s Choice, voted on by people who went to the Hillsborough County Fair and stopped by the contest tent to vote, went to the purple orchid by Bob Dickey. He made it from a shovel and floor tiles and won $100.

First place went to the Prehistoric Metal Dragon, also by Bob from Brandon who got another $100. He made it from truck parts, railroad parts, shovels and chains.

Second place was Lawnmower Flowers by Alexander Fernandez of Plant City. He deftly skirted nematodes and aphids with old lawn mower blades, anchor bars and plastic roll paper ends.

There was also a category just for schools. Dowdell Middle won for its Toad Condo with Rooftop Squirrel/Bird Feeder.

I’m going to run some of these in The Tribune on Sunday. I’m hoping to include in the little Dig This story some ideas for good-looking recycled yard art that doesn’t require the skill of a mosaic artist (a la Susan) or the metalworking abilities of a guy like Alexander. Just easy, fun things that look cool. Like the rake-head wine glass holder idea I stole from a magazine.

Help me out, friends! If you’ve got ideas, put ‘em in a comment or shoot me an email (address up top of the blog here.)

Congratulations, Susan! Looks like there were some really creative submissions - I still like “Boots” best! I haven’t forgotten how much I also liked “Blondie” that was pictured in the blog awhile back. Keep the photos coming!

Thanks you guys. I have been waiting to here what happened. Glad to hear it here first. I’m just thrilled to win anything and to have such wonderful folks who read The Dirt back me up. The winners are truly talented people and I applaud their ingenuity and artistic eye. That orchid really was amazing.
Can’t wait to read about more clever yard art in Sunday’s paper, Penny. I love the rake idea and know you’ll come up with some doozies. Yard art really is all about fun.

I’m definitely with you on the heavy metal stuff. I like a softer approach to yard art but can appreciate the workmanship these guys put into it. And——-a doozie doesn’t mean it can’t be simple and really functional in the yard.
You guys are the best.

Leaving the explaining to me eh? Here goes. In our Tribune insert from the South Shore area, a writer wrote about the Dirty Dirt tour and called it the Dirt Bag Tour. Dirt Bag? Seriously? There was not a dirt bag in the bunch. At least it didn’t look that way. It was kinda funny but way inaccurate. I believe Penny set them straight.
I have not looked into a state fair contest, Chip. This was my first baby step at anything like a contest. If I do, I will definitely get the troops out for it.

Dirt bags Huh! You would think an editor would at lest prof read some thing from an out side source. Unless he or she did and thought it was cute.the county extension office has a home canning class coming up soon and Diane and I will be there.Diane taught me how years ago but I never fail to learn something new at these classes! If any one wants to go this class it is by appointment only so you have to call and make a reservation by the looks of things in our garden we will need to can this year I hope!....“Chip”

Three story garden mural? Oh the pressure. Ha!
Glad you set that editor straight, Penny. He’ll be proofreading from now on I’ll bet.
