ST. PETERSBURG—The Rays and the Red Sox are headed for extra innings after a scoreless ninth inning, with the score tied at 8-8 tonight in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series at Tropicana Field.
The Rays got a baserunner aboard in the bottom of the ninth inning when Aki Iwamura reached on a one-out infield single, his first hit of the night. B.J. Upton struck out—swinging this time—for the second out.
Boston manager Terry Francona opted to go to his closer at that point, replacing reliever Justin Masterson with Jonathan Papelbon to face Carlos Pena. Papelbon entered on a record scoreless streak of 20 2/3 innings over 13 playoff games, the most career innings in postseason history without allowing a run.
Papelbon struck out Pena on a 2-2 pitch at 12:40 a.m.
In the top of the ninth, Coco Crisp hit a ground-rule double that went over the head of Rays center fielder B.J. Upton and bounced over the wall on one hop, but Dan Wheeler struck out Jacoby Ellsbury to end the inning. Ellsbury threw his bat to the ground in disgust after swinging at strike three.
