I love Project Runway, but I have to admit this last season was kind of a yawner. The talent was oustanding, but the personalities weren’t as entertaining as I would have liked. I think it was because there were no drama queens on the show—and I love drama—with the exception of Anthony Williams.
When the eighth season of the reality show returns July 29, episodes will be 90 mintues long instead of the usual 60 minutes. Host Heidi Klum told the AP that fans were always asking to see more of the show, which features up-and-coming designers competiting in fashion challenges for the chance to win $100,000, launch a clothing line and show their collections at New York Fashion Week (actually, the top finalists show their lines at Fashion Week to prevent the winner from being revealed). The show will also air at 9 p.m. (EST) instead of 10 p.m.
Sitting through an extra 30 minutes is going to be difficlut unless there are more interesting personalities in the work room. Aside from Anthony Williams’ delicious quips and Tim Gunn simply being Tim Gunn, there wasn’t much flavor taking place. A few tears, contestants freaking out under pressure, an early quitter and a few fabric disasters can hold my attention for just so long. But this year, since I was rooting—and writing—about Tampa’s own Ben Chmura; I watched it to the end. On more than a few episodes I had a hard time staying awake and had to break out the TiVo. Or I found myself wishing I could fast forward to runway show.
Unless producers can shake up the sewing room with more interesting—and equally talented—designers like Santino Rice (who I loved to hate in Season 2), sassy Southerner Williams or the rebelious winner from Season 3, Jeffrey Sebelia, I think it will be hard for me to stay up past my bed time on Thursday nights.
